FECL 30 (December 1994/January 1995):

"COMPULSORY MEASURES" AGAINST FOREIGNERS APPROVED IN REFERENDUM VOTE

An amendment of the Swiss foreigner law introducing "compulsory measures" against certain categories of foreigners and adopted by parliament on 18 March, was approved by an overwhelming majority of the Swiss people in a referendum vote on 4 December. 73 per cent of the voters and all Cantons (constituent states) approved the new law.

The law allows the detention of foreigners older than 15 for up to one year, in order to secure an eventual deportation order and authorises police authorities to decree territorial bans on foreigners on public order grounds.
